Merry New World Christmas
New World Christmas is one of our largest production projects on the yearly calendar. Planning must commence early as the seamless symphony of Client Service Manager Candice and Head of Production, Sam, is what makes this project sing.

Meri Kirihimete shoppers!
For many consumers Christmas can bring about festive stress, with so many things to think about Christmas shopping becomes a chore rather than a delight. This is why it is an important time for retailers nationwide to create a desirable shopping experience and bring joy back into Christmas shopping. We have worked with Foodstuffs NZ, Foodstuffs North Island, and Foodstuffs South Island for over 30 years, and with each year comes many large scale-production and delivery projects including New World Christmas. New World brings joy to customers through their creative in-store promotions this year saying “Meri Kirihimete” to shoppers across New Zealand, partnering with appliance manufacturer Smeg for their promotional giveaway!

A Symphony of Logistics
New World Christmas is one of our largest production projects on the year calendar. Planning must commence early as the seamless symphony of Client Service Manager Candice and Head of Production, Sam, is what makes this project sing.
With the disruption of Covid-19, Candice worked to keep communication as fluid as possible. This project was on track for completion in early November with a dispatch window of just 1 week. “We met as often as we could with those involved to bring some organisation to what felt like chaos. This year Sam and I knew we would need to lean on Production coordinators, Rita and Isabel for support as this was going to be a very tight turnaround to get the project out the door and around the country in time! With the year that we have all had, a New World Christmas was just what customers needed, giving them the shopping experience they deserved. The synergy amongst the Baseline team was going to make this happen.

Middle Earth
“This year 144 pallets were loaded onto trucks and dispatched around the country over just 6 days!”
The promotion runs nationwide with every single New World store across the country receiving promotional material dispatched from our warehouse. “It’s like middle earth here” says Sam. “Every single part of the promotional material is collated here at production before we pack it all together for each individual store.” With everything collated at the production warehouse and materials being produced in house too, space quickly became a priority. This year saw Sam enlisting the help of the company next door, using their warehouse to store the overflow of materials.
The fulltime team along with support from several casual staff members print, cut, stack, fold, roll and package materials over a 2 week production period. Every New World store requires different quantities of materials due to the unique layout and size of each store. This is all packed by hand and loaded onto pallets. This year 144 pallets were loaded onto trucks and dispatched around the country over just 6 days! These pallets are handmade as packing and dispatching is much like a game of Jenga with each package stacked in a specific way to ensure the structural integrity and balance of the contents as they make their way to the destined New World store. “If the pallets are made in house, then the security of the contents during transit is in our control. We have to make sure we think about everything, sometimes before we have even started producing material”. The size, shape and weight of all materials is taken into consideration along with protocols set in place by the couriers. As well as the successful delivery of pallets it is important to ensure the ease of unpacking and assembly of the promotional material for store owners too.

Experienced hands make light work
During New World Christmas the machines run just about 24/7. Some machines can be pre-set to run overnight however others require supervision from an overnight crew and with a 2-week production period and even shorter dispatch period there was no time to slow down.
Watching the production team bring this project together is like watching a Broadway performance. “Every member has a specific role in which they are highly experienced”, says Rita. Their individual knowledge is united, seeing deadlines exceeded and the consistent flow of pallets dispatched right across the country. “To bring together a project this large in such a short timeframe is amazing, the team should feel proud of what they have accomplished, successfully delivering on another New World Christmas!”
Onto the next
The expertise and hours dedicated to this project by the production and dispatch team have helped bring the Christmas spirit to New World stores all over New Zealand. Planning for next year is already fast approaching! For now, the team reset for the new year, preparing to embark on the journey towards New World Christmas for 2021.
